I bought a Panasonic TC52DL500D rear-projection TV from a broken store for 150 yuan. At first, I thought I could fix it and use it again. But after checking, I found that the projection bulb had exploded. When I looked up the price online, it ranged from 450 to 1200 yuan. That was way too expensive for me, so I decided not to repair it. But I couldn’t just throw it away either.
Then I thought, since I work in car electronics, maybe I can try using a car xenon bulb instead. They are cheaper and brighter. A good quality xenon bulb only costs around 50 yuan. I did some research and found that the color temperature of 6000K works well without causing any visible changes in image quality. So I removed the original bulb and tried installing the xenon one.
The original lamp driver worked smoothly with the xenon bulb. I carefully removed the broken wick with a blade and screwdriver, then installed the new bulb. I made sure to position the wick correctly. Since the original wick was fixed on the lamp cup, I used automotive putty to secure it in place. The xenon bulb is 35W, while the original was 120W. I wasn't sure how bright it would be, but it still worked pretty well.
This kind of TV is basically obsolete now, so I didn’t expect much. It was more of a test or a fun project. After all, I had nothing to lose. In the end, I managed to get it working with some creative fixes. Here are a few pictures of the process and the result. The images are real and show the actual outcome of my experiment.
