I bought a broken Panasonic TC52DL500D rear-projection TV for 150 yuan, thinking I could fix it and use it again. But after checking, the projection bulb was completely blown. I looked up the price of replacement bulbs online, which ranged from 450 to 1200 yuan. That’s way too expensive for me, so I decided not to repair it—but I couldn’t just throw it away either.
Then I thought about using a car xenon bulb instead. They’re cheaper and brighter. A decent one costs around 50 yuan, and I found one with a color temperature of 6000K. From what I’ve seen, higher color temperature doesn’t make the image look worse—just a bit cooler. I removed the original bulb housing and shade, then installed the xenon bulb. The original driver worked perfectly with the new bulb, lighting it smoothly.
I carefully took out the old wick with a blade and screwdriver, then installed the xenon bulb. Paying attention to the positioning was important. The original wick was fixed on the lamp cup, but I didn’t have that part anymore. So I used automotive body filler to secure it in place. The xenon bulb is only 35W, while the original was 120W. I’m not sure how much brightness difference there will be, but this TV was already obsolete anyway—it was more of a project than a real purchase.
Long story short, I made a few tweaks and got it working. The results are shown in the photos below. The images are real and unedited.
