OSRAM has made a strategic move by acquiring a 25.1% stake in LeddarTech, a Canadian company specializing in laser radar (LIDAR) technology. This investment is set to enhance OSRAM’s position as a key player in the autonomous driving industry. Founded in 2007 and based in Quebec, LeddarTech has developed cutting-edge solutions that align with OSRAM’s semiconductor offerings. The two companies have previously collaborated, with OSRAM investing tens of millions of euros in LeddarTech.
LeddarTech focuses on creating solid-state LIDAR systems that use infrared light to detect and monitor surroundings. Their patented technology is already being integrated into semiconductor and sensor modules for autonomous vehicles and driver assistance systems. This partnership allows both companies to combine their strengths in lighting and sensing technologies.
Stefan Kampmann, OSRAM’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of this investment: “As a leading supplier of induction lamps for self-driving vehicles, we see increasing demand in this space. By investing in LeddarTech, we are taking a crucial step toward becoming the top solution provider in this field.â€
Charles Boulanger, CEO of LeddarTech, added, “Our shared vision and technological alignment make this partnership meaningful. OSRAM’s investment is a significant milestone in our growth strategy. We’re confident that working with a leader in automotive lighting will help us become the benchmark for solid-state LIDAR in the automotive sector.â€
This strategic investment reflects the growing need for advanced LIDAR solutions in autonomous vehicles and other mobility applications. LIDAR works similarly to radar but uses laser light instead of radio waves, enabling precise object detection and distance measurement. As the demand for safer and smarter transportation continues to rise, OSRAM and LeddarTech are well-positioned to lead the way.
