SF6 gas composition analysis

I. Management Regulations

According to the GDW 168-2008 "Power Transmission and Transformation State Inspection Test Procedures," SF6 gas composition analysis can be conducted selectively when there are issues with the quality of the SF6 gas or during accident investigations. This test helps identify potential problems in electrical equipment early, ensuring safe and reliable operation.

II. Working Principle

During the operation of SF6 electrical equipment, partial discharges caused by various insulation defects lead to the formation of different decomposition products. These include sulfides such as SO2, H2S, SOF2, SF4, and SO2F2; fluorides like HF, CF4, and metal fluorides; and carbides such as CO, CO2, and low-molecular hydrocarbons. The SF6 gas component analyzer detects these decomposition products, helping to determine the type, nature, severity, and progression of insulation faults. This information is crucial for condition monitoring and fault detection in SF6 electrical equipment.

III. Test Standards

IV. Test Procedure

(1) Preparation:

  • Gather all necessary tools and materials, including an SF6 gas decomposition product tester, test tubing, and a combination tool set.
  • Check the power supply before starting. If the battery is low, charge it promptly.
  • Ensure the transition adapter is complete and properly sealed.

(2) Upon arriving at the site, turn on the instrument’s power switch. It will go through a calibration process that takes about 10 minutes. Connect the exhaust pipe to a safe, unmanned area and close the regulating valve on the instrument panel.

(3) Select the appropriate adapter for the equipment being tested. Connect the intake tube to the adapter, then attach the adapter to the device under test.

(4) Once you enter the measurement interface, click the “Start” button to begin the test.

(5) Slowly open the flow control valve and maintain a flow rate of 0.2–0.3 L/min.

(6) After a few minutes, the instrument will determine if the reading is stable (within a certain fluctuation range). It will automatically locate the address twice and allow you to read and save the results once the test is complete.

(7) To continue testing, simply connect the adapter to the next device without turning off the instrument.

(8) After finishing the test, disconnect the adapter from the equipment and remove the tubes one by one.

(9) Perform a sample gas purge to remove any remaining gas inside the instrument, preventing internal corrosion. Then, turn off the power to the device.

V. Precautions

  • Before using the instrument, ensure it is fully charged, especially if it will be stored for a long time.
  • When charging, just plug the power cable into a 220V socket. The instrument will start charging automatically without needing to turn on the power switch. A full charge usually takes over 20 hours.
  • If the levels of SO2, H2S, CO, or HF exceed normal ranges, retest to confirm the results.
