Lumileds: Attaching importance to China's “One Belt, One Road” strategy

The Chinese consortium led by GO Scale Capital to acquire the Lumileds Bacheng shares of Royal Philips of the Netherlands for $3.3 billion is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.

On April 28th, Klemens Brunner, senior vice president of Lumileds and general manager of automotive lighting Asia Pacific, said that the participation of Chinese investors is a very big development opportunity for Lumileds. China’s current “One Belt, One Road” strategy is very good. The opportunity to further expand the market.

Senior industry insider BobLee said that the transaction is a rare opportunity for the domestic LED industry. With this transaction, the internationalization of the domestic LED industry can be accelerated, and the technology and manufacturing capabilities of the industry can be improved.

Some analysts said that the global LED automotive lighting market is developing, and the overall output value in 2018 is expected to reach 2.5 billion US dollars. The potential of China's automotive lighting market is also huge. Relevant information shows that as of the end of 2013, China's motor vehicle ownership exceeded 270 million, and privately owned cars exceeded 85 million, an increase of 13 times over 10 years ago. The growth in car ownership has led to a surge in demand in the automotive lighting market.

At present, the overall pattern of competition between Philips and Osram has been formed in China. Although some people in the industry pointed out earlier that Philips is more focused on the vehicle supporting field in automotive lighting, the expansion in the automotive aftermarket is not strong, but Klemens Brunner revealed to the author that the company will not only pay attention to China's OEM market in the next five years. That is, the new car market, but also very concerned about China's aftermarket. Klemens Brunner believes that there are so many used cars in China and the demand for services for consumers is very high.

China has proposed the “Belt and Road” national strategy, Klemen Brunner said, Lumileds attaches great importance to this, which can further expand the automotive market and exports. At the same time, the “One Belt, One Road” convenience policy has made Lumileds trade easier and easier, and can export more Chinese products to the rest of the world. “Lumileds already has two automotive lighting production plants in China, and is also preparing to build a new LED automotive lighting bulb production line, which is now being exported from China to Asian countries, including Indonesia, India and Thailand.”
