Shanghai Automotive Group Co., Ltd. (SAIC Group) and Infineon Technologies AG have announced the formation of a joint venture to produce power modules tailored for China’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle market. SAIC will hold 51% of the equity, while Infineon will own 49%. The new company, named "SAIC Infineon Automotive Power Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.," is based in Shanghai, with its production facilities located within the expansion project of Infineon’s Wuxi plant. The facility is expected to begin mass production in the second half of 2018.
At the opening ceremony held in Wuxi, Jochen Hanebeck, a member of Infineon’s Management Committee and responsible for business operations, highlighted the significance of this partnership. He stated, “By offering advanced semiconductor solutions, Infineon continues to lead in key electric vehicle markets, including China, which has become the world’s largest and fastest-growing market for hybrid and pure electric vehicles. This collaboration with SAIC, China’s leading automaker, will strengthen our market position and expand our production capacity to meet growing demand. With products specifically designed for China’s electric vehicle industry, we aim to drive further business growth and serve Chinese customers more effectively.â€
Chen Zhixin, President of SAIC, expressed his confidence in the partnership, saying, “We are excited about this cooperation. Infineon is well-regarded for its expertise in automotive power modules, and we believe their advanced power solutions will seamlessly integrate with our system know-how. This collaboration will not only enhance customer convenience and provide an exceptional driving experience but also help address energy and environmental challenges, supporting the sustainable development of the automotive industry. Together, we are committed to innovation and creating a new blueprint for future growth.â€
The joint venture focuses on manufacturing automotive-grade framed IGBT modules, specifically the HybridPACKâ„¢ series, which was first introduced by Infineon in 2006. These modules are widely used in plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles globally. Their flexibility and reliability allow customers to optimize system design, improve cost-performance ratios, and reduce development and production time.
According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China produced 794,000 plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles in 2017. Market research firm IHS Markit predicts that this number will rise to 2 million units by 2020 and reach 4.3 million by 2024—accounting for nearly 45% of global demand. This joint venture is positioned to play a crucial role in meeting this rising demand and supporting the continued growth of the electric vehicle sector in China.
