On April 14, 2016, Amazon unveiled its latest Kindle Oasis, the e-reader designed to target avid e-book enthusiasts, with sales commencing on April 28 of the same year. Interestingly, China's Amazon introduced this device on June 20 of that year, even though the U.S. and other Asian markets were still selling it. Alongside this launch, rumors spread that the Oasis model had been discontinued in April, making the eighth-generation Kindle the shortest-lived model in Kindle history. Last July, I bought a discounted Oasis for 120 yuan with 24 interest-free installments to replace my old Bordeaux Kindle 6. To my surprise, it turned out to be somewhat of a swan song. As stock shortages emerged, prices on Taobao have skyrocketed, leaving me in an awkward position without a stable market price. It’s unfortunate that such a well-designed product was discontinued after just a year on the market.

Exterior
Despite purchasing this device a year ago, it remains in excellent condition. The first impression of the Kindle Oasis is how small it is—so compact that it’s hard to believe it has the same 6-inch screen as the Kindle Paperwhite (KPW3) or Kindle Voyage (KV). Its length is comparable to a 4.7-inch iPhone 7, and its width is about two iPhones placed side by side. The device is incredibly lightweight, making it perfect for one-handed use.
Holding it in your hands provides another level of comfort. The ultra-thin design on the left side ensures a natural fit for your left hand, while the raised middle section cradles your fingers perfectly. The lightweight build makes it easy to hold for extended periods. This is my favorite way to grip the device. However, the back panel tends to collect fingerprints easily, which can be frustrating for those who are particular about cleanliness.
One of the standout features of this generation is the addition of a leather cover with a built-in battery. According to official specs, the internal battery holds 245mAh, while the leather case adds an extra 1290mAh, totaling 1535mAh. This is a significant boost compared to the Voyage's 215mAh. While this increase in battery capacity doesn't necessarily revolutionize battery life, it does extend usage duration. From my experience, the Kindle Oasis performs consistently, and its battery life is notably longer than previous models.
After a year of use, the leather cover shows some scratches, but overall, it feels durable and protective. Adding the cover significantly increases the weight and affects the grip slightly.
My daily routine involves keeping the device in a protective sleeve when not in use. With regular usage, the body’s battery typically lasts for a full day. Even with the leather cover attached, the device charges automatically when needed.
The screen remains a 6-inch, 300ppi e-ink display, with a response time similar to previous generations. User complaints about the screen quality have been minimal.
Two physical buttons have been added to the right edge of the screen, which can be customized to turn pages backward. The tactile feedback is satisfying, though I rarely use them.
The power button doubles as an indicator, which is a nice touch. Charging is impressively quick, but the price of over 2400 yuan without a charger remains a downside.
What Kindle Can Bring Me
Moving on to the content, Amazon launched the Kindle to promote its e-book store, now the largest digital bookstore globally. Amazon also offers Kindle Unlimited, allowing users to borrow thousands of books for a monthly fee of 12 yuan or 112 yuan annually, making it a great deal for avid readers.
Additionally, the curated selection of books on Amazon is reasonably priced, building a small library over time.
Kindle also excels at converting web documents or local files (PDF, TXT) into readable formats, surpassing mobile phone readability.
Reading comics on Kindle is enjoyable, but with only 4GB of storage, consider the 32GB manga version for better performance.
Kindle isn't ideal for note-taking or viewing detailed PDFs, tasks better suited for iPads or laptops.
Conclusion
In summary, the Kindle Oasis is a premium e-reader with a luxurious design. It combines the functionality of an e-reader with the elegance of a luxury product. Given its high price point and niche appeal, Amazon's decision to discontinue it might not come as a surprise. From a financial standpoint, discontinuing the product at this stage may not be the best move, considering sunk costs. I believe Amazon is paving the way for future innovations, as the Oasis's design remains impressive. Based on sales figures from Amazon's Tmall flagship store and customer reviews, the Oasis has sold over 10,000 units, though this falls short of the Paperwhite. For such a high-margin product, this shouldn't be considered a failure. Let’s wait and see what new offerings emerge in September before making any final judgments.
