Recent data reveals that in the first half of this year, the volume of color TV retail sales reached 21.81 million units, marking a 7.3% decline compared to the same period last year. However, within this overall downward trend, curved TVs have shown an unexpected and significant rise, with sales growing by as much as 47%. This remarkable performance highlights the strong market potential and consumer interest in curved television technology, which has surpassed many expectations.
The growing popularity of curved TVs has attracted numerous brands to enter the market. Since Samsung introduced its first curved TV in 2014, domestic manufacturers such as Hisense, TCL, Haier, and Xiaomi have also launched their own curved models. Today, well-known brands like Samsung, Changhong, Haier, Hisense, Konka, LeTV, TCL, and Philips are all present in the Chinese market, along with smaller players like Xiaomi and others. The increasing number of companies offering curved TVs has played a key role in driving up sales and expanding the product range.
In addition to more brands entering the market, the variety of curved TV models has also expanded significantly. According to data from Zhong Yikang, the number of curved TV models increased from 176 in the first half of 2016 to 289 in the first half of 2017—a growth of nearly 100%. Online model availability also rose, from 124 to 195 over the same period. This expansion reflects the industry's confidence in the future of curved TVs and the rising demand from consumers.
Curved TVs have gained widespread attention and consumer approval due to their unique features. One of the main advantages is the enhanced sense of immersion. The curved design creates a more "surrounding" effect, making the screen feel closer to the viewer and improving the visual experience. This makes watching movies or playing games more engaging and realistic.
Another benefit is the wider effective viewing angle. Similar to movie theater screens, curved TVs provide a more consistent and comfortable picture quality across different seating positions. Additionally, curved TVs often offer better contrast ratios than flat-screen models, resulting in deeper blacks and more vivid colors, which enhances the overall visual appeal.
From a design perspective, curved TVs stand out for their modern and unique appearance. Compared to traditional flat-screen TVs, the curved form adds a more sophisticated and artistic touch, appealing to users who value personalization and style. This aesthetic advantage further strengthens their market appeal.
Moreover, there's a clear trend of pairing large screen sizes with curved designs. For example, 21% of 55-inch TV sales were curved models, while the percentage jumped to 31% for 65-inch TVs. Curved TVs contributed more than a quarter of total sales in this segment, showing strong consumer preference for larger, curved displays.
Given these factors, it's reasonable to expect that curved TVs will continue to grow rapidly in the next few years. As consumer awareness increases and the supply chain becomes more mature, curved TVs are likely to become the new standard in the television industry. Their future performance is not only promising but also highly anticipated, signaling a major shift in how we watch and interact with our home entertainment systems.
