Introduction

A motor is an electromechanical device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, and vice versa. Motors are widely used in various applications, with two main functions: one is to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, known as a generator, and the other is to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, referred to as an electric motor.

The basic working principle of a motor is based on electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic force laws. During energy conversion, a motor must have two components that can move relative to each other: one responsible for creating the magnetic field (excitation), and the other that induces electromotive force and carries current. These two parts are typically called the stator (stationary) and rotor (rotating). There is an air gap between them to allow the rotor to rotate freely.

The electromagnetic torque is generated by the interaction between the magnetic field from the excitation component and the magnetic field created by the current in the inductive part. This torque enables the generator to absorb mechanical power from a system and the motor to output mechanical power. Depending on how the magnetic fields are generated, different types of motors are developed.
