Apple recently held its fall event, unveiling a range of new products that have generated a lot of excitement. Among the highlights were the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple TV (2017), iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the highly anticipated iPhone X, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone.
CEO Tim Cook opened the event with a look at Apple’s new headquarters, Apple Park, and shared updates on the company's retail strategy. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, setting the tone for what was to come.
Starting with the Apple Watch, the latest version saw a 50% increase in shipments compared to the previous quarter. It has now surpassed Rolex as the world’s top watch brand, with a customer satisfaction rate of 97%. The Apple Watch Series 3 now includes heart rate monitoring, and Apple is collaborating with Stanford to detect potential heart issues. Additionally, watchOS 4 will be released on September 19.
The Apple Watch Series 3 also features cellular connectivity, allowing users to stay connected even without their iPhone nearby. It supports calls, WeChat, and access to 40 million songs. With a dual-core processor, performance has increased by 70%, and it can now interact with Siri directly from the watch. The screen also doubles as an antenna, and the design is slightly thicker than the previous model.
New color options and a gray ceramic finish are available, and the pricing reflects the upgrades. The first-generation Apple Watch has also been discounted, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
Next up was the Apple TV, which received a major update with the 4K version. This new model offers 4K resolution and HDR technology for enhanced visuals. While it may not be the most exciting product for all audiences, especially in China, it still marked a significant step forward for Apple's media offerings.
Moving on to the iPhone lineup, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus featured glass front and back panels with aluminum frames in seven different colors. They included True Tone display technology and the A11 Bionic chip, which brought improved performance and better low-light photography. The new Portrait Lighting feature uses machine learning to enhance photo quality, while AR capabilities allowed for immersive experiences.
Wireless charging support was also introduced, and pre-orders began on September 15. The iPhone 8 series offered a range of storage options and came with a redesigned user interface.
Finally, the event reached its climax with the introduction of the iPhone X. This flagship device featured a stunning Super Retina Display, measuring 5.8 inches, with OLED technology and a resolution of 2436×1125. It eliminated the Home button in favor of a gesture-based navigation system, and Face ID replaced Touch ID for secure unlocking.
Face ID uses advanced sensors and a neural engine to recognize faces with high accuracy, even under changing conditions like lighting or facial hair. The A11 Bionic chip powers the iPhone X, providing faster processing and improved AI capabilities. It also introduced Animoji, a fun feature that tracks facial expressions to create animated emojis.
Despite some initial hiccups during the live demonstration, the iPhone X was generally well-received. It was expected to start pre-orders in October and ship in November.
Apple also highlighted its new AI technologies, including the Neural Engine, which enhances performance and efficiency across various functions. The updated Siri now offers more natural speech, real-time translation, and personalized recommendations based on user behavior.
