Lost my Bluetooth headset last week, which made me rethink the importance of wireless audio devices. The incident reminded me of the crazy discussions when Apple first introduced AirPods, with people worrying about their stability. While my loss wasn’t quite as dramatic as losing AirPods, it did leave me with a void that needed filling.
Coincidentally, Xiaomi announced a new Bluetooth audio receiver just as I began searching for a replacement. I saw a post from Xiaomi’s official Weibo account featuring a new product giveaway. Intrigued, I decided to join the hunt and ended up winning one of these receivers during their promotion on July 6th.
The Xiaomi Bluetooth Audio Receiver retails for 99 RMB (approximately $14 USD) and transforms any wired headphones into wireless ones. It connects through a standard 3.5mm audio jack, making it compatible with almost all wired headphones. The device itself is small enough to carry around easily, and its sleek white design gives it a premium feel.
From a functional standpoint, the receiver supports Bluetooth 4.2 technology and includes a simple button for controlling playback. A single click pauses or plays music, while double-clicking skips to the next track and triple-clicking rewinds to the previous one. While the functionality isn’t groundbreaking, it’s straightforward and works well for basic tasks.
Testing the range and connectivity, I found that the receiver performed admirably within a 30-40 meter range without obstacles. Beyond that, the connection became spotty, eventually dropping off completely around 70-80 meters. Penetration through walls was decent but inconsistent—while it could handle one wall, two often resulted in interruptions or disconnections.
Battery life proved satisfactory. Playing music continuously at moderate volume, the receiver lasted about four and a half hours before needing a recharge. Once the battery dropped below 20%, the device drained quickly, lasting only about 30 minutes until shutdown. Given its small size, the battery life was reasonable and aligned with expectations.
While the Xiaomi Bluetooth Audio Receiver offers good value for its price, there are a few drawbacks. First, it doesn’t include a charging cable, which feels like an unnecessary omission. Second, there’s no volume adjustment feature, which might be a downside for some users. Lastly, while 99 RMB is affordable, the pricing may seem steep compared to other budget options.
Overall, I’d recommend this device for anyone looking to upgrade their wired headphones to wireless without breaking the bank. Its compatibility with existing equipment makes it a practical solution for those who want to transition to Bluetooth audio without replacing their entire setup. If you’re patient, you might catch a discount during one of Xiaomi’s promotions. Until then, happy listening!
