In 2017, the pure electric vehicle market was dominated by a few key players, with Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC), Zhidou, and Jianghuai New Energy leading the charge. The overall sales reached approximately 450,000 units, marking an impressive growth rate of 81% compared to the previous year. Among the best-selling models, mini electric vehicles were at the top, followed closely by A-class sedans and SUVs. BAIC, as a major player in the industry, held a strong position due to its access to the largest domestic pure electric vehicle market in Beijing.
However, one company that stood out in the landscape was Jianghuai New Energy, part of the second group of automotive companies. As one of the earliest firms in China to focus on R&D, production, and sales of new energy vehicles, it had spent over a decade developing its core technologies. Jianghuai had mastered the essential components of electric vehicles, including battery modules, motors, and electronic control systems, along with key technologies like electric steering, braking, and energy recovery. Particularly notable were their breakthroughs in battery thermal management and thermal runaway prevention—critical areas for safety and performance.
With these technological advantages, Jianghuai New Energy was well-positioned for a strong 2018. In 2017, the iEV6E model became a standout product, selling nearly 30,000 units and establishing a solid presence in the market. Its cute design, high-quality craftsmanship, and affordability made it popular among shared mobility companies such as Global Motorsports, Shougang Gofun, and Xiaoming Travel. The iEV6E became one of the most widely used models in China's shared car platforms, creating numerous traffic events and proving its popularity.
Jianghuai also launched the iEV7S, a small electric SUV, which featured advanced liquid-cooled battery technology. This innovation helped solve common issues like reduced range in cold weather and low-temperature charging problems. The iEV7S also incorporated five-level battery safety protection, ensuring the stability and security of the battery pack. These features positioned Jianghuai as a leader in electric vehicle technology.
In 2017, Jianghuai independently developed liquid-cooled battery management technology, breaking foreign monopolies and improving upon traditional air-cooled systems. This technology not only enhanced battery life but also maintained optimal temperatures between 10–35°C, improving driving safety and user experience. It also expanded the usability of electric vehicles in different climates, minimizing environmental impact on battery performance.
Additionally, Jianghuai successfully addressed thermal runaway safety issues, solving the risk of battery explosions in high-energy lithium-ion packs. This achievement allowed the iEV7S to become the first domestically produced electric SUV to implement this technology, marking a significant milestone in the industry.
In 2017, Jianghuai introduced four new models, and in 2018, they planned to launch several more, including the iEV6ES, iEVA50, iEV7S, long-range iEV7, and iEVA60. These models would cover multiple segments, from A00 to B-class vehicles, forming a comprehensive lineup across six platforms. This wide range of products aimed to meet diverse needs, from private consumers to shared mobility and corporate fleets.
Jianghuai also signed a cooperation agreement with Volkswagen and Weilai, signaling recognition of its technical capabilities and manufacturing expertise. While some media questioned the partnership, it was clear that both Volkswagen and Weilai saw value in Jianghuai’s progress in the new energy sector. This collaboration further boosted confidence in the company’s future.
As 2018 began, the market faced increasing competition and pressure from subsidy reductions. Only those with strong technology and quality could thrive. The coming year would be a true test for all players, and the results would determine who truly stood out in the evolving electric vehicle landscape.
