On January 19, NetEase Smart News reported that Wang Haifeng, vice president of Baidu and head of Baidu’s AI Technology Platform (AIG), recently held a major event in Silicon Valley. During the event, he announced the establishment of two new research labs: the Business Intelligence Lab (BIL) and the Robotics and Autonomous Driving Lab (RAL). Additionally, three prominent researchers—Kenneth Ward Church, Sui Jun, and Xiong Hui—have joined Baidu Research Institute to strengthen its AI capabilities.
Baidu Research Institute now includes five key laboratories: the Deep Learning Lab (IDL), Big Data Lab (BDL), Silicon Valley Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SVAIL), the newly launched Business Intelligence Lab (BIL), and the Robotics and Autonomous Driving Lab (RAL). According to reports, the BIL will focus on developing advanced data analysis technologies for emerging data-heavy applications, while RAL will concentrate on robotics and autonomous driving, particularly leveraging Baidu's foundational work in self-driving technology.
Kenneth Ward Church, one of the most influential figures in natural language processing (NLP), has joined the institute. He is a founding figure of the empirical approach in NLP and has made significant contributions to the field. Church earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from MIT and has worked at prestigious institutions such as Bell Labs, Microsoft Research, Johns Hopkins University, and IBM Watson Research Center. He founded EMNLP, one of the top conferences in NLP, and served as chair of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) in 2012. He is currently an ACL Fellow and a leading expert in the field.
Sui Jun, who previously served as a project director at the U.S. National Science Foundation, brings extensive experience in big data. He was also a tenured professor at the University of Kansas. Xiong Hui, another new addition, is a lifelong professor at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
In his speech, Wang Haifeng emphasized that this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Baidu Research Institute. The institute will continue to invest in forward-looking basic research, shaping the future direction of Baidu’s AI initiatives and supporting the company’s long-term vision as a leading artificial intelligence enterprise.
