Electronic hobbyists take note: According to recent international reports, Vector Space Systems, a space exploration company, conducted a test launch of their Vector-R rocket last Thursday at the Camden launch site in Georgia. The rocket successfully ascended to a height of 10,000 feet. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the company, which was founded by Jim Cantrell, a former executive at SpaceX.

The launch was primarily funded by NASA, underscoring Vector Space Systems' ambition to establish itself as a leading player in the microsatellite launch industry. Jim Cantrell, the company’s CEO, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “By reducing costs, the resources invested in this rocket can be leveraged to build multiple rockets and conduct numerous launch missions.â€
Unlike SpaceX or the United Launch Alliance, Vector-R is targeting clients with smaller budgets who need satellite launches but cannot afford the high costs associated with larger rockets. While SpaceX's Falcon 9 remains a popular and relatively affordable option, its $62 million price tag is still out of reach for many smaller businesses. Cantrell's Vector-R aims to dramatically cut these costs, bringing the price down to just $3 million—a mere one-twentieth of the Falcon 9's cost.
Cantrell, who played a key role in founding SpaceX, parted ways with Elon Musk back in 2002 due to differing visions. "Musk favored building large rockets, while we believed starting small would be more viable," Cantrell recalled. "At that time, he was right, as the market demand for small rockets wasn't strong."
However, times have changed. With a $31 million investment from Sequoia Capital, Cantrell feels confident that Vector-R will soon attract a loyal customer base. His goal is to conduct 100 launches annually. "We're currently in talks with several potential customers, awaiting final contracts," Cantrell shared. "In a month, we'll unveil our first official client."
The microsatellite market is experiencing rapid growth. According to market research firm MarketsandMarkets, the sector is valued at $2.92 billion today and is projected to grow at an impressive annual rate of 20%. By 2022, it could expand to $7.5 billion. However, Vector-R faces stiff competition from rivals like Rocket Lab and Virgin Orbit, both of which are eager to capitalize on this booming market.
As the industry continues to evolve, Vector-R must stay agile and innovative to maintain its competitive edge. Despite these challenges, Cantrell remains optimistic, believing that his team’s focus on affordability and efficiency will ultimately pay off. "Our strategy is simple: deliver value to our customers while keeping costs low," he concluded.
