Foreword The landlord is a hardworking chemical dog. Most weekdays, he's busy moving bricks in the lab. His journey into photography began with an exhibition in the library, where a senior student showcased four years of his photography work. That experience sparked my dream of owning a camera and capturing my own images. I was still a freshman then. It took me two years of saving to afford my first SLR camera—the Pentax K5II. I did a lot of research before purchasing it and ended up buying a parallel version from the richest family. I still remember the price was 3600 RMB. Alongside a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, my photography journey officially began. (Back then, the Pentax lens was popular among Japanese photographers, and now it's somewhat like JD.com or Amazon.) Picture of Pentax K5ii found on the Internet, long discontinued
Pentax K5II Period (Enlightenment Phase) Since I bought the camera, I experimented with various things—read photography books, watched online photos, joined forums, and learned how to use the camera. At first, I shot scenes and flowers. Then I moved to the school community, where I tried taking portraits for the first time. To do that, I borrowed an old Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX. The manual focus was really tough, and I only dared to focus on the center.
Most of my time with the Pentax was spent shooting landscapes and flowers, and I spent a lot of time on that. Also, I was shy and rarely photographed classmates or friends, but I did a lot of experimenting, at least becoming familiar with the camera’s operation. After more than a year, I sold the K5II and the camera, and bought a new Nikon D750.
The 50mm f/1.8G lens, although not as sharp as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX, offers good focus and quality, and it’s lightweight and affordable.
After slowly accumulating shutter counts, under the guidance of classmates, I joined the school’s photography association—a mini version of the Mage Association. From time to time, we helped photograph events from other clubs. Although some were boring, it gave me more chances to practice using the camera in different situations and slowly became familiar with how to take photos in various scenarios.
These are some photos taken during Girls' Day in college. Not great, mainly limited by technical skills.
Later, I entered a Yongnon manual light and wanted to learn lighting techniques and try new shooting styles. During this period, I also got involved in Yinguang, a new lighting group.
Got a young partner to be the model
Anyway, I kept trying and experimenting.
Later, when I met my current girlfriend, I also took photos of her from time to time. However, she wasn’t very photogenic, and I struggled with the technique.
The 85mm G has better focusing than the 50mm.
The 35mm A is more suitable for event shooting.
With the new lens, the focusing and optical quality are excellent, and the breathing effect is reduced, so it doesn’t shrink like a bamboo shoot. It's really good, but I couldn't afford it.
The following continues with more photos, including those of students in the show, and even some Photoshop work. Unfortunately, the editing isn't done by me.
After this, I tried various activities and photo assignments. I also experimented with the school’s studio to take some studio shots.
