I chose the HiVi H5MKII Bluetooth/WiFi 2.0 wireless active speaker instead of a more expensive TV because I wanted to save money for this audio system. My second-hand apartment is still in the repayment phase, and my budget is tight. Although there are many options available on e-commerce platforms—like Edifier, Swans, and even JBL—I ultimately went with the H5MKII because it perfectly fits my needs. Mainly, I use it to connect to my LCD TV via Bluetooth for watching movies and TV shows, which enhances the sound quality. I also use it with my phone or portable player to play music. The Wi-Fi feature is something I really like, as it offers a wider range than Bluetooth and allows me to move around the house without losing signal. Plus, I appreciate the remote control and the piano-paint finish, which my wife also likes.
When I first opened the box, it was well-packed with bubble wrap and two layers of boxes containing the accessories. Each speaker was wrapped in a protective bag to prevent scratches. Inside the box, I found the main speaker, a remote control, connection cables (RCA, 3.5mm, optical), a power cord, and a manual with a warranty card. A battery was already installed in the remote, and there was a spare Panasonic button battery included.
The remote control is made of full metal with a brushed finish and gold keys. It feels good in hand, but the metal can get cold in winter. The buttons feel slightly stiff, with short key travel. It has controls for power, mute, two audio inputs, Wi-Fi mode, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial, and volume adjustment. There’s also a small slot at the bottom that can be used to insert a card, like a phone card.
The main and auxiliary speaker cables have a foolproof design with nuts to prevent loosening. The RCA to 3.5mm cable and fiber optic cable were easy to connect. After setting up, I replaced the old TV in the living room with the new HiVi H5MKII. The front panel is a solid metal design with a treble and bass unit covered by an iron mesh. Since we have pets and plan to have kids, the mesh gives me peace of mind. The piano-paint finish looks elegant, but it collects dust easily, so I’ll use the included dust covers when not in use.
The speaker features a 26mm metal dome tweeter, known for clear highs and a bright, transparent sound. The 5.25-inch bass driver uses a high-intensity damping PP diaphragm, with a bowl-shaped cover. The main box has a power switch and volume control on the right, while the left side has knobs for adjusting bass and treble. There’s also an infrared sensor and LED indicator, which changes color depending on the mode.
The back of the speaker has an inverted hole, so it needs space from the wall. The bottom has four rubber feet, though metal ones would look better. Connecting via Bluetooth was smooth, with a blue indicator light. For Wi-Fi, I had to disconnect from other networks, connect to the speaker’s network, enter the password, then access the settings via a browser. Once connected, it worked seamlessly, and I could stream music from my phone anywhere in the house.
Overall, the H5MKII offers great value with its metal panel, safe mesh cover, remote control, and multiple connectivity options. The warm, full sound is perfect for vocals, and the design is both functional and stylish. However, the Wi-Fi setup could be easier with an app, and the mesh cover makes cleaning harder. The piano paint is beautiful but shows dust quickly, and the spikes could be longer for a better aesthetic.
