On January 3 and 4, 2018, the National Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television Working Conference was held in Beijing. The event aimed to thoroughly study, promote, and implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, as well as the guidelines from the National Conference of Propaganda Ministers. The conference reviewed the work completed in 2017, analyzed current challenges, and outlined plans for press, publication, radio, film, and television activities in 2018. Deputy Minister Nie Chenshui, along with several senior officials from the Central Propaganda Department, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, and the National Copyright Administration, represented the General Administration at the conference. Key figures such as Tian Jin, Tong Gang, Zhou Huilin, Zhang Hongsen, Wang Gengnian, and Yan Xiaoming also attended. Tian Jin presided over the meeting and delivered a closing speech. During the first day, participants attended the National Conference of Propaganda Ministers and listened to an important speech by Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Secretariat. Nie Chenshui emphasized that the speech highlighted key ideas from President Xi Jinping on propaganda, ideological, and cultural work. He urged all attendees to deeply understand and implement these principles, reinforcing the leadership of the Communist Party in this field. Reflecting on 2017, Nie noted that under the leadership of the Party Central Committee, the press, publishing, radio, and television sectors made significant progress. They maintained strong political orientation, fulfilled major tasks related to the 19th Congress, and improved their quality and international influence. These achievements were attributed to the guidance of Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, as well as the support from the Party and government. Nie stressed that the 19th Congress marked a new era for the industry. He called for a renewed commitment to high-quality development, innovation, and people-centered approaches. He also emphasized the need to strengthen ideological control, improve public services, and enhance global communication efforts. In 2018, five key strategies were proposed: deepening the promotion of Xi Jinping's ideology, creating high-quality content, accelerating technological integration, strengthening management, and enhancing international outreach. Each initiative aimed to build a stronger and more dynamic media landscape. The conference also highlighted the importance of party building and its role in guiding the industry. Officials were reminded to maintain political unity and develop a capable, disciplined, and professional workforce. As the new era progresses, the press, publishing, radio, and television sectors are expected to play a vital role in promoting national development and achieving the goals of a moderately prosperous society. With continued effort and innovation, they aim to contribute significantly to the future of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
