IMEC, Renesas, M4S launch reconfigurable multi-standard wireless transceivers

IMEC, Renesas Technology Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Renesas), and M4S jointly launched a complete transceiver with RF, baseband, and data converter circuits manufactured using a 40nm low-power CMOS process. This fully reconfigurable transceiver complies with various wireless standards and application requirements, and with the upcoming mobile broadband 3GPP-LTE standard.

The development trend of wireless communication terminals that can provide users with a large number of services anytime and anywhere has promoted the development of reconfigurable radios manufactured using deep sub-micron CMOS processes. In terms of the very flexible nature of the 3GPP-LTE standard itself, reconfigurable radio has become its most economical implementation. Moreover, the introduction of the standard will further accelerate the development of reconfigurable radios. The single-chip reconfigurable transceiver jointly developed by IMEC, Renesas and M4S meets the above requirements.

Flexible transceivers including analog-to-digital converters can be reconfigured for all channel software in the frequency range from 100MHz to 6GHz. At the same time, the RF carrier frequency, channel bandwidth, noise figure, linearity and filter characteristics retained by it can also meet the requirements of the communication standard used. In addition, it has the characteristics of high sensitivity, low phase noise and high linearity. According to the requirements of special standards, these features can be used to achieve lower power consumption. In SAW-less 3GPP-LTE-oriented operation, the flexible transceiver can also achieve low out-of-band noise. While achieving high performance and low power consumption for the various standards covered, the transceiver also integrates multi-standard programmability in a very small chip area (only 5 mm²). Therefore, it is competitive with current mobile devices, including single-mode wireless electrodes including mobile phones, smart phones, PDAs, PC cards, USB dongles, etc.

The next phase of IMEC's ​​"green radio" research plan will focus on further reducing material costs and energy consumption by continuing to study digitally excited SAW-less transceivers and high-efficiency transmitters.
