On the evening of February 14th, Beijing time, Apple (hereinafter referred to as "Apple") obtained a new technology patent today, which can identify the user's fingerprint through the screen of the mobile phone, thus paving the way for the iPhone 8 to cancel the Home button.
The patent granted to Apple by the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) on Tuesday was called "an interactive display panel with an infrared diode." The touch panel incorporates micro-LED sensing technology instead of the active matrix hardware used in traditional touch screens.
The patent application for this technology was originally submitted in June 2014 by micro-LED technology developer LuxVue. In the same year, LuxVue was acquired by Apple. In April last year, the patent application was transferred to Apple.
This patented technology can replace the current capacitive sensor with infrared diodes and sensors, paving the way for canceling the iPhone's Home button and Touch ID sensor. At the same time, this is also consistent with recent rumors about the iPhone 8.
Recently there is news that the iPhone 8 will use a "full screen" with invisible Home button and Touch ID sensor. Apple can do this through the new patented technology acquired today.
The fingerprint sensing technology currently used by the iPhone requires the user's finger to touch the capacitive drive ring. In order to achieve the "full screen" in the rumor, Apple needs to integrate the Home button into the panel, or remove the Home button completely from the front panel. The industry believes that the latter is more likely.
