Analysis of the characteristics and application of OGS full-fit technology

The development of smart phones is inseparable from the development of touch technology. In the previous capacitive touch screen technology for mobile phones, two glass structures were used, namely one touch glass and one protective glass (traditional G+G, G+F). The thickness of the touch screen is generally 1.4mm). The mobile phone screen using OGS technology has the same or even superior advantages in terms of stability, light transmittance and strength compared to the products using the original technology, and is lighter and thinner.

"OGS full-fit technology" is not limited to one technology

So, is OGS full-fitting technology a simple technique for integrating two pieces of glass into one piece? In fact, many long mobile phones use OGS full-fit technology, or it can be said that TOL and In-Cell technologies are all manifestations of OGS technology. It is understood that the technical solutions of the commonly used touch panels on the market mainly include: Touch On Lens (integrated, integrated touch layer and cover glass) and In-Cell/On-Cell (with touch film layer and Display panel integration) two. Due to its cost advantages, Touch On Lens is widely used by domestic manufacturers, while Samsung Apple prefers In-Cell/On-Cell.

Comparison between different technologies

With the screen of OGS technology, the most intuitive feeling for consumers is that the screen has better transparency and color, and the picture has a sense of suspension, which is especially vivid. The effect of this kind of screen on the appearance of the mobile phone is that the body can be made lighter and thinner, and the screen and the black panel can also be well integrated. The overall look does not look like the previous mobile phone screen. There is a clear distinction between "black inside and outside".

TOL technology: cost-effective, widely welcomed by domestic manufacturers

Perhaps everyone has noticed that the OGS full-fit screen, which used to be the brand's high-end machine selling point, has been popularized on some domestically produced thousands of mobile phones. Most new models will be unanimous when they are listed. OGS full-fit screen "as a feature selling point of the product. Most of the OGS technologies used in domestic mobile phones are Touch On Lens, or "TOL". This technology is mainly led by touch panel manufacturers, mainly integrating the touch film layer with the protective glass in the protective glass. The inside is plated with an ITO conductive layer for direct coating and photolithography. Thanks to the savings of a piece of glass and a single fit, touch screens using TOL technology can be made thinner and less expensive.

TOL technology mainly has two manufacturing processes of “small piece process” and “large piece process”. As the name suggests, the small piece process is to cut the glass into small pieces according to the screen size, then strengthen it, and finally carry out the touch line engraving, which has the disadvantage of high production difficulty. The large-scale process is first processed, then cut, the scale effect is more excellent, but the early cutting has weakened the edge strength of the glass and other shortcomings, resulting in insufficient glass strength, capillary cracks on the edges. However, with the improvement of technology, such as the decline of glass hardness, the problems have been solved, so the current TOL technology is the most cost-effective, lower cost, so that it is widely favored by domestic manufacturers.

Some models like Meizu are directly indicating that they use the screen of TOL technology, while some of the domestic advertised phones that use OGS full-fit screens, most of which are products using TOL technology. Because there is still no unified statement because of the classification of the full-fitting technology, some manufacturers directly equate TOL technology with the OGS technology, so that a large part of the new product introductions are advertised as being “OGS fits the screen” instead of “the screen uses TOL integrated touch technology”.

Most domestic mobile phones use the so-called "OGS full-fit screen", which is the screen product produced by the above-mentioned TOL technology. TOL technology is relatively mature, and cost-effective, mass production is also easier. Therefore, TOL technology will eventually replace the increasingly old "G+G" screen technology in the future, whether it is high-end and low-end mobile phones.

On-Cell technology: More applications on AMOLED panels

Speaking of the AMOLED panel, I believe that everyone first thought of Samsung's own mobile phones. Compared with the traditional TFT panel, the AMOLED panel has the characteristics of self-illumination, which can appear in a lighter and thinner posture, and has greater advantages in terms of reaction speed, color expression, contrast, and viewing angle. Samsung is in an absolute position in the production of AMOLED panels, so AMOLED series panels are also the most widely used in Samsung products.

On-Cell technology is characterized by a method of embedding a touch screen between a color filter substrate of a display screen and a polarizer, that is, a touch sensor is provided on the liquid crystal panel. From the perspective of the large-scale supply of AMOLED panels, it shows that On-Cell technology is quite mature in application. In terms of characteristics, the screen with On-Cell technology is similar to the TOL screen, and it also has the characteristics of light and thin, excellent screen display, and because the AMOLED screen has no light-emitting unit, it also has advantages in power saving.

AMOLED screen characteristics

Strictly speaking, although Samsung's AMOLED series panels have applied On-Cell technology on a large scale, from the future trend, On-Cell will be replaced by more advanced In-Cell technology. However, for Samsung, the recent use of On-Cell technology screen is still a very cost-effective thing, after all, the technology is mature, and the largest AMOLED screen manufacturer, no need to worry about capacity and technical issues. For a long time, On-Cell technology is believed to be the mainstream screen technology for Samsung phones.

Samsung itself is the largest manufacturer of AMLOED panels, and most of its own digital products use AMOLED screens, so no matter whether it is capacity or sales, Samsung does not need to worry about it, it only needs to constantly update and improve the technology. However, in the face of Apple's joint ticket makers focusing on In-Cell technology, I believe Samsung has its own considerations. Perhaps in the near future, we can see the emergence of Samsung-made panels using In-Cell technology.
