In 2017, global TV shipments from major brand manufacturers declined by 4% year-on-year, reaching 228 million units, according to Sigmaintell's survey data. Despite this overall decline, the top 15 ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) TV producers saw a significant rise in shipments, increasing by 18.1% to 84.9 million units. Sigmaintell attributes this growth to improvements in ODM technology, faster production speeds, and lower costs. As a result, many brand manufacturers have shifted their low-end product lines to ODMs, allowing these companies to thrive even as the broader market faced challenges.
The demand for ODM TVs remained strong, with purchase orders from branded TV vendors rising by 15% in 2017. This helped the ODM industry maintain positive growth amid a general downturn in the TV market.
TPV continued to lead the ODM TV market in 2017, driven by its strong R&D capabilities. Its shipment volume grew by 2.6% year-on-year to 16.3 million units. Meanwhile, Foxconn’s acquisition of Sharp allowed it to expand its supply chain, leading to a massive 72.8% increase in shipments to 14.6 million units, making it the second-largest supplier.
Mainland Chinese ODM companies also experienced impressive growth. TCL SCBC reported a 24.3% year-on-year increase in shipments, reaching 8.3 million units. BOE saw a 12.5% rise in shipments to 7.7 million units, while Shenzhen MTC recorded a 25.7% increase, shipping 6.5 million units. These figures highlight the growing influence of Chinese ODMs in the global TV manufacturing landscape.
Looking ahead, Sigmaintell forecasts that ODM TV shipments will continue to grow in 2018, reaching 88.5 million units—an increase of 4.2% compared to 2017. This suggests that the ODM sector is well-positioned to sustain momentum in the coming years, even as the broader TV market continues to evolve.
