Since the end of last year, Mushrooms wanted to build a desktop computer. However, various events and gatherings kept getting in the way, and he never really thought about it seriously. Some time ago, he finally decided to take action and started preparing for the build. The previous laptop he used was an X799 with an E3 1231 V3 processor, a 980M graphics card, and 16GB of RAM. It was sufficient for daily tasks like browsing the web, chatting on QQ, listening to music, and even editing maps. However, after graduation, he rarely played games and found the system slow at times, especially when opening multiple tabs or running resource-heavy applications. The fans were always running, which made him think that a new build was necessary.
The main requirements for the new PC were aesthetics and RGB lighting. Even though this might seem unrelated to performance, it's something Mushrooms really values. In terms of performance, he wants a CPU with strong multi-core capabilities, and while the graphics card doesn't need to be top-tier, it should handle games like League of Legends smoothly. He admits it's not the best setup, but it's more than enough for his needs.
**II. Configuration**
**1. Chassis**
Mushrooms chose the Patriot Crescent Moon case. He was drawn to the image of the right-lower corner during selection and placed the order immediately. Upon receiving the large box with the Patriot logo, he was impressed by the packaging. Inside, there were care stickers, including free reissue and compensation packages. The case itself was well-protected with thick foam and additional cardboard layers. The tempered glass side panel was clear, and the internal structure was spacious, supporting ATX motherboards, up to a 430mm-long graphics card, and a 170mm CPU cooler height. There were also SD and TF card slots on the top panel, making it very convenient for storage.
**2. Motherboard**
He went for the ASRock Tai Chi motherboard, which had a sleek black and white design. The power supply section was particularly impressive, featuring a 15-phase power delivery system and passive cooling. The color scheme matched the aesthetic of the case perfectly.
**3. CPU**
Mushrooms opted for an AMD Ryzen 7 1700. After considering options like the 8600K, he decided on the 1700 for its better value and performance.
**4. Memory**
For memory, he chose KFA2 DDR4 3200MHz with RGB lighting, ensuring compatibility with the AMD platform.
**5. Graphics Card**
Instead of going for a high-end GPU, he settled for a second-hand GTX 760, which met his basic gaming needs without breaking the bank.
**6. Power Supply**
He selected the Patriot eSports 600W fully modular power supply. It featured an 80 Plus Gold rating, wide voltage input, and a ducted fan design for efficient cooling.
**7. Cooling**
Initially, he planned for a Captain RGB liquid cooler but ended up using a third-party overclocking cooler from Antec, which worked well for testing.
**8. Case Fans**
Mushrooms picked the COOLING DF-12025 fans, which supported AURA RGB lighting and offered good airflow for a reasonable price.
**9. Hard Drive**
For storage, he temporarily used a mobile SSD, planning to upgrade later.
**III. Installation Process**
The installation process began with placing the motherboard on foam. The CPU was installed, followed by the memory. The motherboard was then mounted inside the chassis, along with the graphics card and power supply. The hard drive was installed on the back of the motherboard, and the case fans were added for improved airflow. Cable management was done neatly, and the system was powered on for the first time. The RGB lighting added a nice touch, and the overall look was both functional and stylish.
**IV. Summary**
Overall, Mushrooms is satisfied with the build, although some follow-up work is needed, such as installing a water cooler and optimizing RGB lighting. The case offers plenty of space for future upgrades, and the internal layout is clean and organized. One lingering question is whether to go with a Samsung SM961 256GB NVMe SSD or a magnesium M600 512GB. Both have their pros and cons, but the M600’s 4K performance boost via Momentum Cache makes it a solid choice for daily use.
