Linear Technology Introduces Narrow/Wide Input Voltage Range Synchronous Step-Down DC/DC Controllers

Photocoupler

Linear Technology Corporation has introduced the LTC3852, a synchronous step-down DC/DC controller designed for both narrow and wide input voltage ranges—ranging from 2.7V to 5.5V or 4V to 38V. This versatile device features an internal charge pump that generates a 5V bias voltage, allowing it to drive low RDS(ON) and standard logic-level power MOSFETs from a nominal 3.3V supply. The charge pump and the DC/DC controller operate independently, meaning the charge pump can supply a 5V output to power the internal gate driver while the DC/DC converter draws power from another source, which can go up to a maximum of 38V.

The LTC3852 is capable of delivering up to 25A of output current across a wide voltage range, from 0.8V up to 99% of the input voltage (2.7V to 5.5V). This makes it particularly well-suited for point-of-load applications powered by 3.3V systems. Its constant-frequency current-mode architecture offers flexibility with an optional fixed or phase-lockable (PLL) frequency ranging from 250kHz to 750kHz. Users can also choose between Burst Mode operation, pulse skipping, or forced continuous mode to optimize efficiency under light load conditions.

The device incorporates OPTI-LOOP® compensation technology, which ensures excellent transient response across a broad range of output capacitors and ESR values—including all ceramic input and output capacitors. For current sensing, the LTC3852 can either measure the voltage drop across the output inductor (DCR) for maximum efficiency or use an optional sense resistor in series with the inductor for higher accuracy. Additionally, the current foldback feature helps reduce MOSFET heating during short-circuit or overload situations.

The LTC3852 includes adjustable soft-start or tracking capabilities, allowing users to fine-tune the power-on behavior. It also features an accurate 0.8V reference with ±1.25% accuracy over a wide temperature range (-40°C to 125°C). With a maximum duty cycle of 99%, the LTC3852 exhibits a very low dropout voltage, making it ideal for battery-powered applications where extended run time is critical.

This high-performance controller is available in a thermally enhanced 3mm x 5mm QFN-24 package. At a price of $1.95 per unit for 1,000-piece orders, it’s readily available from stock. For more details, visit the official website.
