BOE is optimistic about artificial intelligence, the number of patents is more than Samsung, creating an Internet of Things ecosystem

Wang Dongsheng, founder and chairman of BOE, recently emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is the key driver behind the fourth industrial revolution, significantly influencing the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and genetic technologies. He announced that investing in AI will be a major focus for BOE in the coming years. On November 14, during an event in Wuhan, Wang stated that BOE plans to strategically expand its presence in the IoT sector. The company aims to explore new opportunities and challenges related to display devices, smart systems, health services, and sensors in the IoT era. Collaborating with industry partners, BOE seeks to build a comprehensive IoT ecosystem. At the Global Innovation Partners Conference held on the same day, Wang highlighted his vision for AI's role in shaping the future. He described AI as the core trigger technology of the fourth industrial revolution, which is accelerating progress in IoT and genetic research. According to him, the evolution of AI aligns with different stages of IoT development. From 1950 to 2015, AI was in its foundational phase. Between 2016 and 2030, it entered the ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence) stage, corresponding to IoT 1.0, characterized by one-to-one or one-to-many smart connections. From 2030 to 2045, AI is expected to reach AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), marking the rise of IoT 2.0, where all things are interconnected. After 2045, AI could enter the ASI (Artificial Superintelligence) stage, potentially leading to IoT 3.0. BOE has been actively expanding its global footprint. In October, the company announced that China’s first 6th generation flexible AMOLED screen had entered mass production, making BOE the second company worldwide to achieve this milestone. This move is seen as a challenge to Samsung’s dominance in the market. Earlier, in 2015, BOE invested in the world’s highest-generation line — Hefei’s 10.5th generation TFT-LCD production line — positioning itself as a leader in liquid crystal displays. It also plans to build a 10.5-generation line in Wuhan with a 46 billion investment. In terms of R&D, BOE allocates 7% of its annual revenue to innovation. In 2016, the company filed 7,570 new patent applications, 80% of which were invention patents. By mid-2017, over 4,000 new applications had been submitted, with an estimated annual total exceeding 8,000. BOE’s total active patents surpassed 55,000, placing it at the top of the industry. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in 2016, BOE ranked eighth globally in PCT applications with 1,673, surpassing Samsung and trailing only Intel. At the conference, BOE also signed a strategic partnership with Alibaba and SAP to develop a new retail ecosystem. This collaboration reflects the company’s broader strategy of open application and technological integration.
