And investigate! US Trade Commission Announces Investigating Apple's Infringement of Patent Case

[Global Network Technology Reporter Lindy] According to CNBC, on November 15th, Beijing time, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it has launched an investigation into several Apple devices suspected of patent infringement.

The FTC stated in a press release that the investigation was triggered by complaints from Aqua Connect and Strategic Technology Partners. The products under scrutiny include various Apple devices such as Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Apple TVs. This marks another legal challenge for Apple as it continues to face multiple patent disputes across different jurisdictions.

Citing Bloomberg News, in early November, Qualcomm filed a new lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of breaching their contract and sharing confidential information with Intel. This latest legal move adds to the growing list of conflicts between two major players in the tech industry.

In addition, Apple is currently dealing with a patent dispute involving Corephotonics, an Israeli company that claims the dual-camera system in the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus infringes on its intellectual property. The case is still ongoing, and if found guilty, Apple could face significant financial penalties or be forced to modify its designs.

Corephotonics alleges that Apple violated four of its patents related to smartphone dual-camera sensors and optical zoom technology. These patents were filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in November 2013 and June 2016, respectively, while the iPhone 7 Plus was released in September 2016. This timeline raises questions about whether Apple was aware of the patents before launching the product.

Apple has a long history of facing patent lawsuits. In 2015, the company was found guilty of infringing a patent held by the University of Wisconsin’s licensing department, leading to a $862 million settlement. Despite Apple’s attempts to challenge the validity of the patent, including requesting a review from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the ruling stood.

Throughout the years, Apple has been involved in numerous legal battles, not only with Qualcomm but also with other companies as it introduces new products. One of the most high-profile cases involves Apple and Qualcomm, which has sparked widespread debate within the tech community.

The Apple-Qualcomm litigation has seen several developments over the years. Initially, Qualcomm was the primary supplier of chips for Apple’s devices. However, in January 2017, Apple sued Qualcomm for alleged monopolistic practices, leading to a breakdown in their relationship.

In January 2017, Apple filed a patent lawsuit against Qualcomm in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, accusing the company of monopolizing the wireless chip market and seeking nearly $1 billion in damages. Later that year, Apple also filed a lawsuit in China, claiming Qualcomm had abused its dominant position in the chip industry and demanding 1 billion yuan in compensation.

In April 2017, Qualcomm responded by filing a counterclaim, arguing that without its technology, the iPhone would not have succeeded. The legal battle escalated further when Qualcomm sued Foxconn’s parent companies, including Hon Hai Precision, Wistron, Compal, and Heshuo, accusing them of violating its patents. Apple expressed support for the foundries, stating it was willing to assist them in counter-suing Qualcomm.

By July 2017, Qualcomm had filed additional lawsuits against Apple, claiming that certain iPhone models infringed on six of its patents. It also requested the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to issue a "limited exclusion order" for Apple's iPhones assembled in Asia. At the same time, Qualcomm filed a lawsuit in Germany, further expanding the scope of the conflict.

On August 8, the ITC agreed to investigate Qualcomm’s claim that Apple’s iPhone 7/Plus models infringed on its patents. This development added another layer of complexity to the ongoing legal battle.

In October 2017, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf stated that while there were serious disagreements over patent rights and licensing fees, the dispute was ultimately a commercial matter. He emphasized that Apple and Qualcomm remained closely connected and expressed hope that they would eventually find a way to cooperate again.

Just days later, on November 3, Qualcomm filed another lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the company breached their contract and shared sensitive information with Intel. This new legal action underscores the ongoing tensions between the two tech giants.

Recently, Mollenkopf warned investors during a conference call that the Apple-Qualcomm dispute could turn into a long-term war, highlighting the complexity and potential duration of the legal battles ahead.
