LEDInside's latest report from TrendForce's Green Energy Division shows that the COB (chip-on-board) packaged LED market (including ceramic package/EMC package COB products) for lighting reached US$580 million in 2016, and the market size is expected to break through in 2021. The company has a compound growth rate of about 4% from 2016 to 2021.
Wu Yingjie, an associate professor of LEDinside, said that COB products are mainly used in the commercial lighting market. With the improvement of technology, the performance of high-power COB products tends to be stable, and has recently been gradually applied to outdoor lighting, including LED industrial and mining lamps, street lamps and other markets. Because high-power LEDs and COB LEDs have product design advantages and high light power that are not available in medium power, they will enhance the competitive advantage of the high-end lighting market.
Wu Yingjie pointed out that international manufacturers have complete COB product lines, focus on product light quality, reliability and light intensity, create high customer use groups, and have IP protection, becoming the main supplier of choice for major export lighting manufacturers. Chinese manufacturers rely on cost-effective and large domestic demand market to develop EMC-packaged COB products, driving the rapid growth of COB revenue for lighting.
In terms of 2015 rankings, Cixizen and CREE are the first and second place respectively, and CiTIzen has the largest market share with its fairly complete product line. In 2015, both CiTIzen and CREE developed a high-intensity COB product line, and actively entered indoor commercial lighting below 10 watts and 50 watts of engineering and outdoor lighting at a cost-effective price. This year, CiTIzen and CREE launched COB products for the plant lighting market, and revenue is expected to grow substantially.
Sharp enters medical lighting and commercial lighting applications with dual-color temperature products and patent protection. Bridgelux products are cost-effective, and the main products are still in engineering lighting. The two companies are tied for third place; Lumileds and Nichia (Nichia) expanded its COB product line significantly and grew rapidly, ranking it in the fifth place. The two manufacturers expect more products to be launched in the second half of this year, which will lead to a significant increase in annual revenue growth.
Since 2014, Samsung has been actively developing lighting and has started to invest in COB products. In 2015, revenue grew significantly and entered the seventh place. Wu Yingjie further pointed out that Chinese manufacturers are actively developing COB products. For example, the company has launched a full-spectrum COB for plant lighting, and its sales performance has been impressive. It ranked eighth in 2015.
In addition, Guangzhou Silicon Energy has been focusing on the COB market. It has developed rapidly in recent years. This year, it successfully launched high-density and high-color rendering products, and its competitiveness in the high-end commercial lighting market continues to increase. Luminus Devices was acquired by Sanan Optoelectronics in 2013, mainly targeting high-end commercial lighting. Currently, it has set up a production base in Xiamen to expand its production capacity, which is expected to further expand its revenue.
