A smart grid demands lines capable of self-diagnosis and self-recovery, which means cable manufacturers need to enhance their innovation capabilities and continuously develop advanced smart cable solutions. According to Zhao Huan, deputy director of the High Voltage Institute at the China Electric Power Research Institute, traditional cable products must evolve through innovation to include self-diagnostic features.
Currently, the exact form of a smart cable is still being defined. It's possible that in the near future, an extraordinary type of smart cable will be widely used in communication and power infrastructure, even appearing on railway lines. The issue of cable theft could soon become a thing of the past. The intelligent system of a smart cable typically consists of three main components: first, ultra-light and discreet smart chips embedded in different parts of the cable; second, special conductors that connect all the chips and are calibrated according to the actual length of the cable, transmitting monitoring signals; and third, a monitoring terminal or control unit. This system has an automatic alarm function that detects damage or theft by sensing changes in the cable’s length, triggering tracking programs to locate the problem and guide emergency response or recovery efforts.
Breaking through in nanotechnology and micro-power technology is crucial for the development of smart cables. Researchers are working on creating cost-effective and user-friendly materials that can penetrate the aluminum core or protective sheath of cables, or even replace certain cable components. To enable remote sensing, smart cables must be equipped with a long-lasting micro-power supply to ensure continuous monitoring. These cables have a wide range of applications, from automobiles and pet tracking to securing valuable items and critical public infrastructure, playing a vital role in preventing theft.
Some experts envision a future where smart cables can indicate their load capacity through color changes. For example, if a cable carries more than 1000 amps and exceeds its limit, its surface color would shift from white to another hue, providing an immediate visual warning. This feature would greatly assist in maintaining safe and efficient power transmission. Another potential application is self-healing insulation, which can recover from electrical discharges by incorporating additional materials. If a company successfully develops such technology, it would not only boost its industrial competitiveness but also drive broader innovation in the sector.
