Once the rumors that Apple has joined the development and manufacturing of Micro LED appear, it seems that the trend of the future display war has changed again.

Apple was exposed to "secret" research and development

Recently, it was reported that Apple is designing and manufacturing its own display screen in California's R & D and manufacturing facilities. This display screen is a Micro LED screen. Hundreds of engineers are investing in this project, and this technology may be used in Apple Watch first.

Once the news flowed out, it immediately caused shock in the panel display industry. Share prices of Samsung Display Company, LG Display Company, Japanese Display Company, and Sharp declined.

Apple previously acquired LuxVue Technology, a company that develops Micro LED display panel technology. In the past ten years, Apple has applied for a total of 11 Micro LED related patents, while LuxVue has applied for 23 patents, which means that Apple has a total of 34 MicroLED patents.

Kim Jong-chan, the head of the display panel department of the South Korean Intellectual Property Office, publicly stated that Apple has applied for these patents to the Korean government because South Korea has two major display panel giants, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. Will use MicroLED display in the device.

In fact, after completing the acquisition, Apple aimed at Micro LED. However, due to the difficulties in implementing this technology, the plan was put on hold.

At present, Apple has not made a public response to this news.

Regarded as the ultimate LED

Micro LED is considered to be the ultimate LED in the industry. Like OLED, it is composed of light-emitting diodes. Both are "self-luminous", which can provide the same contrast and color performance as OLED, and they are also thin and light.

Due to the different materials of the two, in theory, Micro LED may have better performance than OLED in brightness, response speed, contrast, color saturation. In terms of display density, Micro LED can further break through. In theory, if Micro LED is used on iPhone 8, the display density can reach more than 1500ppi.

In actual use, OLED must reduce the white screen and high-brightness display in order to achieve power saving effect, and Micro LED can consume 90% less power than LCD and 50% lower than OLED in terms of power consumption.

Giants have stepped in

In fact, at this year's CES show, Samsung launched the world's first MicroLED TV "The Wall", which is a 146-inch modular TV, using MicroLED technology, has amazing clarity and is not affected by size, resolution or shape limits.

Last month, Samsung denied that it would return to the field of OLED large-size screens, which means that Samsung will still focus on QLED and Micro LED in the future.

At the same time, the news pointed out that LG Electronics executives visited the TV business unit in Pingze City, Gyeonggi Province on February 21, and pointed out that it is necessary to prepare Micro LEDs larger than Samsung Electronics ’The Wall TV by September this year. For TV, LG Electronics plans to use LG Innotek's Micro LED.

Domestic panel industry giant BOE has joined the R & D of Micro LED. On March 15, BOE stated on the investor interaction platform that at present, the company has carried out technical research on Micro LED and has made some progress.

Mass production is still difficult

For a long time, Apple has been unable to control its own "fate" on the screen.

Currently, in the field of small and medium-sized OLED screens, Samsung is the absolute leader, while in the field of large-sized OLED screens, LG is the leader.

It is reported that Samsung ’s OLED screen yield rate for Apple ’s mobile phones is only 60%, which directly affects the processing and manufacturing of Apple ’s entire mobile phones and ultimately restricts shipments. At the same time, in terms of price control, Apple is also in the screen sector At a disadvantage, it all makes Apple "frustrated."

However, even if Apple wants to use Micro LED to achieve overtaking in corners, surpass several oligarchs in the current panel display industry and realize self-made screens, it is not easy, and it may be difficult to achieve in the short term.

The essence of MicroLED is a micro array of LEDs, which directly determines its extremely high technical difficulty.

Panel display industry technicians pointed out to reporters that Micro LED components are smaller than 100 microns. The difficulty of production is how to transfer and paste millions of tiny LED components into a whole panel, thereby improving the yield of larger-size panels.

The placement accuracy of these tiny LED components is required to be between 1.5 μm. Under the extremely small panel size, completing a monolithic RGBLED chip on the same wafer material requires higher process technology and materials, and ultra-high density packaging technology.

The LED inside of the research institute TrendForce analyzed that the cost of MicroLED TV is much higher than that of traditional LCD or OLED TV. At present, the cost of LCD and OLED can be suppressed to the consumer's acceptable level, but it is difficult for Micro LED TV.
