China's geophysical ship "Haiyang Petroleum 721" completed its equator for the first time

Today, on July 15th, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced a significant milestone in offshore exploration. For the very first time, China's most advanced deep-water geophysical survey team has successfully completed a 3D seismic exploration mission in the equatorial waters of West Africa. This achievement marks a填补空白 in China’s operational capabilities at the equator’s zero latitude. The project was carried out off the coast of Gabon, covering an expansive area exceeding 10,000 square kilometers. This operation represents the largest single seismic exploration project ever undertaken in maritime oil exploration history. The harsh environment presented unique challenges, with water temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius and marine life growing at rates several times faster than those found in the South China Sea, pushing the limits of the survey cables. The survey lines stretched over 180 kilometers, with the shallowest point being just 30 meters below the surface. Wu Tao, fleet manager of "Haiyang Youji 721," noted that during the operation, all 12 of their 8,100-meter-long cables were deployed simultaneously, covering an impressive sea area of 1.891 million square meters. This vast area is equivalent to over 1,200 standard football fields and pushed the operational boundaries of the team. "Haiyang Youji 721" maintained continuous operations at sea for five months, setting a record for the longest continuous operation by a geophysical vessel. Over this period, they achieved unprecedented levels of daily and monthly productivity, with the highest daily output reaching 116.14 square kilometers. Qi Meisheng, CEO of CNOOC Oilfield Services Co., Ltd., stated that the successful completion of this project demonstrates China’s ability to conduct high-end 3D seismic surveys under extreme conditions. This capability will play a crucial role in advancing China’s technological equipment for the global oil industry, particularly in the "One Belt and One Road" initiative within the international energy sector. The deep-water geophysical fleet includes the Offshore Oil 720 and 721. Offshore Oil 720, the first of its kind in Asia, boasts a length of 107.4 meters, a width of 28 meters, and the capacity to tow 12 8,000-meter-long cables. These vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to map the ocean floor and assess oil reserves, paving the way for future offshore development. Offshore Oil 721, built on the foundation of the 720 model, was constructed and launched in just 15 months, setting a record for the fastest construction time of its kind. Together with its sister ship, Offshore Oil 720, they formed a "Made in China" fleet that successfully completed the seismic exploration mission in the equatorial waters of West Africa. This accomplishment not only highlights China’s growing prowess in offshore exploration but also underscores the nation's commitment to advancing global energy solutions through cutting-edge technology.
